COVID-19 BOOSTER SHOTS NOT REQUIRED FOR TRAVEL TO HAWAII
For those considering booking Kona Hawaii accommodations this spring it is great to know that the Governor of Hawaii announced earlier this month that domestic travelers will not be required to provide proof of COVID-19 booster shots. Individuals who have received their primary COVID-19 vaccination series at least 14 days prior to arrival to the island will be exempt from the mandatory five-day quarantine. Additionally, those who provide an acceptable negative pre-travel test will also continue to be exempt.
While booster shots are not required to travel, visitor are still encouraged to stay up-to-date on their COVID-19 vaccines. It is also recommended that visitors continue to wear their masks, and travel responsibly throughout the island. Hawaii Tourism Authority’s president and SEO John De Fries went on to add that “Many of Hawaii’s businesses and visitor industry partners continue to work diligently to get their employees vaccinated and boosted to ensure that we can continue to keep Hawaii safe and to be effective hosts to our visitors. We appreciate everyone taking personal responsibility to mālama (care for) ourselves and one another.”
Hawaii’s Safe Travels program applies to all individuals traveling from the U.S. mainland and its Territories to the Hawaiian Islands. Travelers are considered up to date on the 14th day for vaccines that require two shots or for vaccines that require only one shot.
Travels must upload their vaccination records to the Safe Travels website at https://travel.hawaii.gov/ prior to departure. Travelers arriving without proof of vaccination or acceptable negative pre-travel test result will be subject to a mandatory five-day quarantine. This does not apply to passengers arriving directly from an international destination. Federal requirements for entry into the United States remain in place.

Scandinavian Shave Ice has been a Kona landmark since 1991. Located in the heart of Kailua Village just minutes away from Kailua Pier. “Scandi’s” is know by locals as “Da Best Shave Ice In Paradise”. They offer unique flavors such as Love in a Cup, Blue Hawaii, and Haupia (Hawaiian Coconut Pudding) as well as all of the classics. Try it served with ice cream or frozen yogurt in the middle, customer’s choice of three out of 65 flavors and then topped with a snow cap of sweetened condensed milk or coconut cream. This is probably the most unique treat you have ever had.

While the village of Kailua Kona itself has tons to see and do, venturing out to explore beyond is a must when visiting the Big Island of Hawaii. We put together a list of just a few of our favorite day trips from Kona that you will not want to miss. From some of the best beaches to dramatic island valley views, to quaint artist communities and farm day extravaganzas, these day trips from Kona will be sure to give you a different perspective of the Big Island.
Waimea, Honokaa, and Waipi’o Valley Lookout
One of the most spectacular day trips from Kona is the drive up the northern Hamakua coast to the Waipio Valley Look Out. Get ready to adventure deep into Hawaiian country! This route takes you from Kona north to the little mountain town of Waimea which is right around 3,000 ft. in elevation. Begin the journey along the Hamakua Coast to Waimea. From Kona to Waimea takes about 45 minutes to an hour. This beautiful drive takes you through breathtaking open country with absolutely stunning views. There are plenty of spots to stop along the route for a bite to eat but for a special treat be sure to pay a visit to Mamane Street Bakery, one of the Big Island’s top bakeries.
Here we recommend the coastal route, but an alternative is the upper mountain road which gives you the opportunity to take in the stunning views of Mauna Kea, the Kohala Mountain Range, and the coastline. The best days for the road trip are Saturdays or Wednesdays when you can catch a farmers market in Waimea.
Next, take the scenic drive from Waimea to the Waipi’o Valley Lookout via Honokaa, which takes about 40 minutes. Along the way you’ll pass through gorgeous rolling pastures and from the lookout itself you can take in views of the lush valley floor covered in taro fields and long stretches of black sand beach. Take the optional hike down into Waipi’o Valley (a total length of this hike is ~6.5 miles) or go on a tour of a local chocolate farm in Honokaa. Along the main street of Honokaa you can also discover local boutiques, gift shops and some really great restaurants.
Holualoa Town
If art and coffee are a few of your favorite things, this is one of the day trips from Kona you will not want to miss. Just south of Kailua-Kona, is the quaint artist community of Holualoa. In this picturesque village you will find many amazing art galleries as well as coffee shops as Holualoa is also located in the heart of Kona coffee country.
Meander through this charming town to discover shops filled with local art such as handcrafted woodwork, sculptures, paintings, and photography. Visit Holualoa in November for the annual Holualoa Village Coffee & Art Stroll.
Farm To Table Lunch at Gingerhill Farms
Embark on a fun and educational, insider’s tour of a local organic farm. Set in Kealakekua, 9.9 mi from Kailua-Kona, is Gingerhill Farm Retreat. The Best Beaches
There is no shortage of amazing beaches to visit while on the Big Island of Hawaii but some of the best day trips from Kona consist of some of the best.
Hapuna Beach, Hawaii Island’s Largest White Sand Beach, lies just 30 minutes north of Kona — This beach stretches ½ mile along the Kohala coast where it is almost always warm and sunny. Here you will find plenty of parking, food vendors and picnic areas. Enjoy sunbathing, snorkeling and bodyboarding at this ideal spot for families wanting to enjoy a day of surf and sun.
Ho’okena Beach Park lies 40-45 minutes south of Kona and sits adjacent to the ruins of Ho’okena Village. Enjoy beautiful views of the open ocean, enjoy a picnic or to simply relax on the soft sand. At the north end of the beach you can rent kayaks, boogie boards and snorkel gear. There are also small stands for snacks right on the beach. Ho’okena is the perfect place to spend a few hours or an entire day.
Kona is the perfect launching point to explore the Big Island of Hawaii. With so many amazing day trips from Kona available you can get a true taste of all the island has to offer. Kailua-Kona Village
Wander Kailua-Kona’s Alii Drive, home to a plethora of boutiques, restaurants and nightlife. The village of Kailua-Kona can be easily navigated by taking a walking tour. Visit the local farmers market or the original Kona Brewing Co. brewpub in downtown. Or take a short stroll to the nearby historic points of interest which include Hulihee Palace, Mokuaikaua Church and the Ahuena Heiau, all in the heart of the village.
As you can see, there’s lots to see and do in downtown! Kailua-Kona offers visitors the perfect Hawaiian village experience by both day and evening hours.
Outdoor Adventure
If you are talking about access to outdoor activities Kailua Kona is the Big Island capital. Kona offers outdoor adventure seekers many options which include things like world class snorkeling, diving, fishing, and hiking.
The best snorkeling spots on the Big Island can be found in Kona where the water is clear and the waves are smaller. The easily accessed Kamakahonu (King Kam) Beach is perfect for an early morning or late afternoon plunge. At Magic Sands Beach Park the waves are also well-suited for snorkeling. The famous Kona Manta Ray Night Dive is not to be missed. This is one of the most memorable dives in the planet.
The Big Island is known as the best island for fishing in Hawaii, with Kailua-Kona being the main sportfishing hotspot. It has the largest charter fleet and the most legendary fishing grounds making it the ultimate angling location.
Hiking in Kona is an unparalleled experience. The Kona Coast is naturally diverse and has a huge concentration of plant and wildlife species. Numerous trails in Kona trace the coast and the mountains so whether you are looking for an easy trek or a more advanced expedition, you are sure to find a trail that meets your needs.
Many waterfalls can be found on the north and east side of the Big Island. Kailua Kona is the home of world-renowned Kona coffee, considered to be one of the very best coffees in existence. There are hundreds of coffee plantations located in Kona and many offer tours to the public for tours and tastings.
National Parks
Immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture at Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, one of Hawaii’s most sacred historic sites. This 180-acre park was once known as a place of refuge for individuals who broke the ancient Hawaiian laws. Ceremonies would be performed here that were designed to acquit lawbreakers and allowed them a place in Hawaiian society once more. Explore the Royal Grounds, sacred temples, and carved effigies of Hawaiian gods.
At Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park has great cultural and historical information with some amazing views. Structures found here are well maintained and offer a glimpse into what life was like before outside contact. Enjoy the short hike in this park to see sacred Hawaiian temples and petroglyphs. This park is also home to Hawaiian fishponds which demonstrate ancient Hawaiian engineering. Also be on the lookout here for local wildlife including many green sea turtles.
Experience some of most awe-inspiring wonders at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a World Heritage Site. This park is approximately a 2 hour drive from Kailua-Kona but totally worth the trip. The 150 miles of hiking trails take visitors through both desert and rainforest terrains, as well as through volcanic craters! Here you can get up close with not just one, but two volcanoes including one of the most active volcanoes on earth, Kilauea.

Hawai’i Begins Its Vaccine Passport Program
June 4, 2021 Update on Hawai’i’s Vaccine Passport Rollout
Beginning June 15, 2021, all travelers vaccinated within Hawaii will be able to travel via trans-Pacific routes without a pre-travel test. Those who have been vaccinated in Hawaii will be able to fly and return to the mainland without a pre-travel test.
Once the state of Hawaii reaches a 60% vaccination rate – Hawaii may begin allowing trans-Pacific travelers vaccinated on the mainland to travel to Hawaii via the Safe Travels program, without a pre-travel test. Proof of vaccination will be required in some form, details are forthcoming and there is currently no set date for this to begin.
Once the state of Hawaii reaches a 70% vaccination rate, the Safe Travels program may be able to conclude. We’ll monitor this situation closely and continue to post updates accordingly here on this page.
Currently, travelers who have been vaccinated within Hawaii, are now able to travel inter-island without being subject to quarantine and testing rules.
Starting on May 11, 2021 fully vaccinated inter-island travelers will be able to skip the state’s mandatory quarantine and COVID-19 pre-travel testing procedures.
What is a Vaccine Passport?
The Hawaii Safe Travel program will soon allow vaccinated inter-island travelers to upload an image of their vaccination card to the Safe Travels Portal. In doing so, travelers will be given the ability to bypass the current COVID testing travel rules. It is estimated that by mid to late June this option will also be made available to travelers coming in from the mainland.
Travelers wanting to participate in the vaccination passport program will be required to have completed vaccination at least 14-days prior to visiting Hawaii.
Will I Need a Need a Vaccine Passport?
According to Hawaii officials, the vaccine passports will only be an option and not a requirement to travel to the Hawaii. The current travel rules are likely to remain in effect for travelers who choose not to be vaccinated.
For both visitors and residents, the current Safe Travel rules do require a negative COVID-19 test result BEFORE beginning the final leg of one’s trip to the State of Hawai’i. The negative test result must be uploaded onto the Safe Travels Portal within 72 hours of departure or printed out prior to departure in order to have a hard copy in hand when arriving to Hawai‘i. Anyone without a negative test result PRIOR to departure must quarantine upon arrival.

The State of Hawai‘i Safe Travels program is a multilayered approach designed to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 from both trans-Pacific visitors and resident passengers arriving at airports/ports across the island. With the new vaccine passport program under way, many believe it will be easier at the airport to separate, check and verify people who have and have not received the vaccine.
The vaccine passport program is arriving just in time! July through August officially marks the slower season here on the Big Island. Many Casago Kona properties are specially priced during this time of year.
