The Kona region on the west side of Hawaii’s Big Island is arguably one of the best places on the island for a beach vacation.The best beaches in Kona are found just north of Kona Airport, all within 30-minutes of Kailua-Kona. Drive no further to find white-sand beaches with excellent snorkeling and protected turquoise waters.

KAMAKAHONU (KING KAM) BEACH
Kamakahonu Beach is located near the Kailua pier, directly in front of the Marriott King Kamehameha Hotel. The calm water of the cove here makes this one of the better Kona beaches for families with small children. In fact, locals call it the “Keike (Children’s) Beach” as there are practically no waves here.
This beach is a great spot for canoeing, swimming and also for stand up paddle boarding. Snorkelers really enjoy this area too. The beach provides easy entry into the water, with some good snorkeling outside of the protected cove and around to the north. Be aware of boat activity once outside the cove.
Equipment rentals are available right on the beach with Kona Boys Beach Shack, including boards, kayaks and snorkeling equipment. You can also sign up for lessons with their staff. Facilities at the beach include restrooms and outdoor showers.
HONL’S BEACH
Just adjacent to the Kona Reef Resort, Honl’s Beach is perfectly located in the heart of Kona Town. This beach park has several palm trees that offer shade and a place to sling a hammock. The beach itself is on the smaller side, but the sand is soft and there are plenty of large lava rocks that invite you to sit and enjoy the surf.
The surf can be pretty strong at Honl’s, which makes swimming/snorkeling difficult and at times dangerous, but that strong surf also brings out the boarders and surfers for some great entertainment.
It can be crowded here at times but it is beautiful and peaceful. Honl’s is a great little beach if you are looking to lay on the sand and soak in the sun and the view.

MANINI’OWALU BEACH
AT KUA BAY
This gorgeous and easy to get to beach is a favorite of many. Here you are sure to find fun waves for boogie-boarding or body surfing. There’s also some good snorkeling around the rocks on the north end of the beach.
Be aware that Manini’owalu Beach can get quite crowded. Parking is limited, but people are always leaving so it’s not terrible if you arrive a little late. The right side of the bay fills up fast and generally gets more crowded. The left side is awesome, better views and peace and quiet.
KIKAUA POINT BEACH PARK
If you are looking for a quiet, tranquil spot…you have found it. Kikaua Point Beach Park boasts one of the largest, sandiest beaches in Kona as well as nice grassy areas under the trees for relaxing in the shade. If you have young children that are apprehensive about snorkeling, this is the perfect beach for them to get familiar in the water. Here you will find lots of fish, coral, and there are practically no waves on most days. You can often spot sea turtles here too!

Pele, goddess of fire and volcanoes. Hawaii, is no stranger to her. And it is with Mauna Loa’s 2022 eruption the two embraced once more making headlines. Mauna Loa, the largest volcano in the world, soars to over 13,000 feet above sea level and thousands of feet deeper at its base below the water. Big Island Hawai’i Volcanos
Mauna Loa began spewing fountains of lava hundred of feet into the air yet again on November 28, 2022. Mauna Loa Volcano has erupted approximately 33 times in the last couple hundred years though, making it the 2nd most active of the Big Island Hawai’i Volcanos.
Big Island Hawai’i Volcanos are 6 in total though. The island itself was actually formed by the process of these 6 volcanos joining together. While some are inactive and pose no threat, others like Mauna Loa, are highly active. Of all the Hawai’ian volcanoes, Kilauea is by far the most active, both on the Hawai’ian Island and the entire world! Kilauea erupted continuously for over 3 decades, with one of its most notable recent eruptions occurring in May 2018. More Big Island Volcanos!
Mahukona Volcano, Kohala Volcano, Mauna Kea Volcano, and Hualalai Volcano make up the remaining 4 Big Island Hawai’i Volcanos, each with their own set of distinctive characteristics.
Mahukona and Kohala are both considered to be extinct and not expected to erupt again anytime in the future.
Mauna Kea is considered to be a dormant volcano. It has not erupted for over 4,000 years but it it may still erupt at a future time. What is most interesting about Mauna Kea though is that it is actually the tallest mountain from base to summit in the entire world, making it the perfect place for an astronomical research center. Atop Mauna Kea is the Mauna Kea Observator, a world class research facility, dubbed the “most scientifically productive site for astronomy world-wide.” It is well worth the drive up to do some star gazing while on the Big Island.
The 6th of the Big Island Hawaii volcanos is Hualalai Volcano which is the third most active Big Island Hawai’i volcano having erupted an average of 2 to 3 times per millennium. Hualalai is currently overdue for an eruption and is considered a potential danger to the Hawaiian Island.
Visiting Big Island Hawai’i Volcanos
There are many ways to get up close with these Big Island Hawai’i volcanos. One of the easiest is to pay a visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park where you can currently view two eruptions from two volcanoes simultaneously for the first time in decade. Volcanoes National Park contains the summits of both Kilauea and Mauna Loa. Visitors can catch a glimpse of fresh lava flows from both volcanoes from many of the overlooks within the national park. It is a great place for the entire family to explore and learn more about all of the Big Island Hawai’i volcanoes. A must visit while on Big Island.
Guided Hiking Tours and Helicopter Tours are another great way to get up close with Big Island Hawai’i volcanoes.

Akaka Falls State Park
If you only have time for one waterfall adventure during your stay on the Big Island, be sure to visit Akaka Falls State Park, which actually features 2 separate falls. The larger Akaka Falls cascades from over an impressive 440 feet high cliff, while the smaller Kahuna Falls cascades into a series of pools. Both waterfalls at Akaka Falls State Park are easily access via a short .4 mile family-friendly trail that offers absolutely stunning panoramic views for the falls and surrounding terrain.
There is plenty of parking located at the trailhead and all together the hike takes only approximately 45 minutes making this one of the most easily accessed Big Island Waterfalls to visit.

During October of each year professional triathletes from around the world descend upon the Big Island of Hawai’i to participate in the VinFast IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona. This 140+ mile legendary course takes athletes on a journey through the unique and magical Hawaiian landscapes while putting their body, mind and spirit through the ultimate test. After a three-year break from Hawai`i due to COVID-19, Kona welcomed back this iconic triathlon in October of 2022.

The Course
For the first year ever, the race was split into two-days, with professional women racing on Thursday, October 6th, and professional men racing on Saturday, October 8. The race order is always the same: Swim > Bike > Run.
Participants of IRONMAN World Championship in Kona Hawaii started the race off this year with the ROKA 2.4 mile open water swim in Kailua Bay. The swim was followed up with the FULGAZ 112-mile bike ride which took racers along the Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway from Kailua-Kona to the turnaround in Hawi (over 5,800′ elevation gain!).
The race then cumulated with the 26.2-mile HOKA run which begins on famous Aliʻi Drive in downtown Kona and heads up Palani Road to Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway. The athletes then complete their entire journey each year to the sound of thousands of spectators lining the streets to cheer them on as they cross the historical Aliʻi Drive finish line.
The IRONMAN World Championship in Kona Hawai’i is considered to be the “absolute pinnacle” of the triathlon arena and has over the years become an iconic global sporting event. There is no doubt that Kona is where champions race.
IRONMAN World Championship in Kona Hawaii Results
Gustav Iden of Norway took the Gold Medal in the Mens Division of Ironman World Championship in Kona Hawaii 2022 with a total race time of 7:40:24. And it was Chelsea Sodaro of the United States that brought home gold in the women’s division with her total time of 8:33:46.
